Joseph MacInnis

Undersea Explorer

Dr. Joseph MacInnis is a medical doctor, undersea explorer and author. He has written 10 books and numerous articles for magazines including Scientific American, National Geographic and Wired. Among his many undersea accomplishments, he led the first team of scientists to dive under the ice at the North Pole and was among the first to dive to the Titanic.

Recently, Dr. MacInnis joined James Cameron, the Academy Award-winning director of the Titanic, on a two-month expedition into the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. Cameron used the 3D images to produce a $14 million IMAX documentary. In 2005, National Geographic Books released Aliens of the Deep, Dr. MacInnis’ 192 page, illustrated book about the expedition. In 2006, Dr. MacInnis joined Cameron for Last Mysteries of Titanic, a two-hour live television broadcast seen on the Discovery Channel on July 24. His book on the expedition was released with the DVD in 2006.

Dr. MacInnis’ work has earned him a number of distinctions, including four Honourary Doctorates, the Queen’s Anniversary Medal, the Admiral’s Medal, and our country’s highest honour, the Order of Canada.
